Tufnol Technical information
British Standard BS EN 60893 explained.
The current British Standard for laminated sheets is:
BS EN 60893 Insulating materials. Industrial rigid laminated sheets based on thermosetting resins for electrical purposes.
BS EN 60893 is identical in content to the internationally recognised standard IEC 60893. It is published in a number of separate parts, as listed below. Part 3 is also divided into several ‘sheets’.
|
BS EN 60893 Part 1 |
- Definitions, designations and general requirements |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 2 |
- Methods of Test |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 1 |
- Specifications for individual materials. Requirements for types of industrial rigid laminated sheets |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 2 |
- Requirements for rigid laminated sheets based on epoxy resins |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 3 |
- Requirements for rigid laminated sheets based on melamine resins |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 4 |
- Requirements for rigid laminated sheets based on phenolic resins |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 5 |
- Requirements for rigid laminated sheets based on polyester resins |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 6 |
- Requirements for rigid laminated sheets based on silicone resins |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 3 - Sheet 7 |
- Requirements for rigid laminated sheets based on polyimide resins |
|
BS EN 60893 Part 4 |
- Technical Report | More than 40 different types of laminate are defined and these individual grades are detailed in Sheets 2 to 7 of Part 3. The different types are easier to follow, when the abbreviations are understood. They are:
|
EP refers to Epoxy resin |
CC refers to Cotton Cloth |
|
MF refers to Melamine resin |
CP refers to Cellulosic Paper (made from wood or cotton fibres) |
|
PF refers to Phenolic resin |
GC refers to woven Glass Cloth |
|
UP refers to Unsaturated Polyester resin |
GM refers to non-woven Glass Mat |
|
SI refers to Silicone resin |
PC refers to woven Polyester-fibre Cloth |
|
PI refers to Polyimide resin |
WV refers to Wood Veneers |
| |
CR refers to Combination Reinforcements (i.e. those containing more than one type of reinforcement |
So, for example, ‘Type EP GC 201’ refers to an epoxy resin bonded glass fabric grade. The numbers are used simply to distinguish between the types.
Tufnol offers grades against many of the types specified in this standard. However, some types are outside our product range, whilst others are not included as they are not widely used.
