TUFNOL Technical information
British Standard BS EN 61212 explained.
The current British Standard for round laminated tubes and rods is:
BS EN 61212. Industrial rigid round laminated tubes and rods based on thermosetting resins for electrical purposes.
BS EN 61212 is identical in content to the internationally recognised standard IEC 61212. It is published in a number of separate parts, as listed below. Part 3 is also divided into several ‘sheets’.

BS EN 61212-1 |
General requirements |
|
BS EN 61212-2 |
Methods of test |
|
BS EN 61212-3-1 |
Specifications for individual materials. Round laminated rolled tubes |
|
BS EN 61212-3-2 |
Specifications for individual materials. Round laminated moulded tubes |
|
BS EN 61212-3-3 |
Specifications for individual materials. Round laminated moulded rods |
Individual grades are detailed in Sheets 1 to 3 of Part 3. The different types are easier to follow, when the abbreviations used are understood. They are:
|
EP refers to Epoxy resin |
CC refers to Cotton Cloth |
|
MF refers to Melamine resin |
CP refers to Cellulosic Paper (made from wood or cotton fibres) |
|
PF refers to Phenolic resin |
GC refers to woven Glass Cloth |
|
SI refers to Silicone resin |
MP refers to Mica Paper |
So, for example, ‘Type EP GC 21’ refers to an epoxy resin bonded glass fabric grade. The numbers are used simply to distinguish between the types.
Tufnol offers grades against many of the types specified in this standard. However, some types are outside our product range, whilst others are not included, as they are not widely used.
